How a business coach uses his YouTube channel to connect with his audience.
Hey, so in this video we're going to take a look at how a business coach is using a YouTube channel and video content marketing to provide value to his audience and to connect with potential clients. So the channel we're looking at today belongs to Coach Sean Smith, who is basically a coach for business coaches. So he provides content that can help business coaches build their businesses. So the first thing we'll look at are a few numbers. So Coach Sean Smith's channel has 11 point 118,000 subscribers and he's been posting on YouTube since March, 2008. But as you'll see, we're going to look a little bit at the evolution of his channel over those 10 years or almost 11 years at this point, and you're going to see that there is definitely an improvement over time, which is actually something really important that we're going to talk about a little bit later.
So if we look at the channel itself, the first thing we notice is a large header at the top of the page. Now, this is a very common feature for most successful YouTube channels. What's great about these headers is you can use them for multiple reasons. The first thing we see obviously is that his name is there, his logo is there, his tagline is there, and there's also this announcement that there will be new videos every Thursday. I think this is important. Once you have a subscriber base, creating consistency in the viewership is a really effective tool to keep that audience and to grow it. Now, obviously if you make that promise, you need to keep it, but for the most part it's a really good strategy to make sure that you're consistent and then your audience keeps coming back for more. Another great feature on these headers is if you look in the bottom right corner, there are links there to his website and to his social media pages.
This is also a great way to make sure that you're taking advantage of your audience, not in a bad way, but in a good way, and you're taking advantage of the fact that they're on your page and if they like your content, they're going to want to know what else you're up to. Do you have a course available? Do you have coaching services available? What's going on in your social media? Do you want these people to also follow you on your other channels? And by providing those links right on the front page like that, you're just making it easier for people to contact you and to access your other content that's available. So something else that we noticed in his video content is that he has these really long videos, one hour, two hours, three hours long. Those videos are actually webinars. In some cases they were filmed live, in some cases they weren't.
Now, the great thing about a live webinar is that yes, you're offering this live opportunity for people to interact with you, but then once it's over and if you record it, you can then repurpose that and repost it so other people can see it as well. Another way is to create a webinar and just recording in advance and then post it and let people access it. Now with a webinar, you're going to have to work a little bit harder because you have to put more preparation into it. Obviously, if you're going to be creating something that's one or two or three hours long, you're going to have to put in the work, but as you can see, his live videos and his webinar videos get a lot of views. So people are interested in long format content as long as it's well developed. Another thing I mentioned in the introduction is the fact that he's been at this for almost 11 years.
Over time, there's an evolution. I love looking at that. I love looking at people who've been at this for a few years. I like seeing the evolution of their content, but don't let the fact that you're not experienced or that you don't have the best equipment stop you. Get started and then improve as you go, which is what most people with successful YouTube channels who've been doing this for a while have done in the past. Also want to look at some of the other styles of videos that he's creating. So one of them is he uses whiteboards and chalkboards in his videos. So basically he's writing all of the content that he wants to cover in the background on this chalkboard, and then he can go point by point and talk about it.
Another way to do this would be to write on the chalkboard as you go, the way a school teacher would in class. That one's probably a little bit trickier. You'll have to be a little bit more prepared, but what I like about the chalkboard or whiteboard is it's just an extra visual graphical element that is going to break up the monotony of just staring at this single person on camera. Another example is using screencasts or demos to break up the footage.
So a screencast or a demo is basically if I'm talking about a website or I'm talking about a piece of software, I'm going to use an actual demonstration of that website or of that software, and I'm going to overlay that with the video of me talking to the camera. As far as producing the screencast or demos goes, it's super simple. You can use a software like QuickTime if you have a Mac, or I think you can use something like Camtasia, which is only $30 or $40 if you have a PC, and both of those softwares will give you a really nice clean high definition image when you're doing your screencast or demos.
One last example that I want to talk about is how he uses title slides in some of his videos. So let's say you have a 15 minute video where you're covering five different topics. A nice way to break up the footage and to introduce each topic is to use a title slide, which is a full screen image with some text. Now, for that image, you can find it, you can find there's tons of templates out there. You can use stock photography, you can use templates that have already been designed. If you want to use something that's more accustomed to you and you really want to brand it, then maybe you can hire a graphic designer to do that or you can try to do it yourself. But title slides are a great way to either introduce a topic or introduce the question that you might be answering in that part of the video. So those are some examples of how Coach Sean Smith is using a YouTube channel and video content marketing to connect with his audience and connect with potential clients.
Hope you enjoyed it. If you have any questions, let me know and I look forward to the next case study.
